Crystal Healing for Fertility: Stones for Anxiety & Grief
Trying to conceive is as much an emotional journey as a physical one. The two-week wait, a negative test, a pregnancy loss, another friend's announcement: each one lands in the body. In Chinese medicine, those feelings are not separate from fertility. They move the qi, affect the blood, and shape how the whole system responds.
One of the gentlest tools we use alongside acupuncture and herbs is stone medicine, sometimes called crystal healing or stone healing. The approach in this post comes from Jeffrey Yuen, an 88th-generation Daoist priest of the Jade Purity tradition and one of the most respected teachers of classical Chinese medicine in the West. Yuen has spent decades restoring stone medicine to its place in the tradition; the earliest Chinese materia medicas list stones before herbs.
Below you'll find the stones Yuen teaches for the emotions fertility patients feel most often (anxiety, panic, fear, grief, depression, jealousy, frustration and self-blame), plus exactly where to place them and how to find each acupuncture point yourself.
Stone medicine is a complement to medical and fertility care, not a replacement for it. If you are struggling with depression or thoughts of self-harm, please reach out to your doctor or a mental health professional.
How Stone Medicine Works in Chinese Medicine
In Yuen's teaching, acupuncture mainly reaches the body's surface energy (wei qi) and herbs reach its nourishing layer (ying or yin qi). Stones reach deepest, to the yuan qi, our constitutional essence. Minerals are absorbed by the bones and marrow, so stones work on the level where jing, the essence behind fertility, is stored.
Yuen also gives a modern explanation: minerals are absorbed through the skin and can influence blood chemistry and neurotransmitters. Each stone's chemistry points to its action. Copper stones speak to the liver, manganese stones to the heart, magnesium stones to the spleen, and lithium-bearing stones calm the spirit.
Three ways to use a stone
- Place it on an acupuncture point while lying down for 20 to 30 minutes.
- Hold it. Yuen teaches that women hold a stone in the right hand and men in the left. Holding a round stone also presses PC 8 in the center of the palm, which calms the heart.
- Wear it as a pendant, bracelet or mala so it touches the skin all day. A bracelet sits over the wrist's major source points.
Yuen recommends small, tumbled stones for point work, because they are easy to tape in place. Most of the stones below are inexpensive and easy to find. For fertility patients, use them topically only (see Safety below).
How to Find Acupuncture Points at Home
Acupuncturists measure the body in cun, a unit scaled to your own body. You only need two measurements:
- 1 cun = the width of your thumb at the knuckle.
- 3 cun = the width of your four fingers held together, measured across the middle knuckles.
Use your own hand to measure your own body. Points are usually in a slight dip or tender spot, so press gently and feel for it. Here are the points used in this post:
| Point | Where it is | How to find it |
|---|---|---|
| CV 17 (Ren 17, Shanzhong) | Center of the breastbone | On the midline of the sternum, level with the space between the 4th and 5th ribs; roughly between the nipples. |
| CV 12 (Ren 12, Zhongwan) | Upper abdomen | On the midline, halfway between the navel and the bottom tip of the breastbone (4 cun above the navel). |
| CV 8 (Ren 8, Shenque) | Navel | The center of the belly button. |
| CV 5 (Ren 5, Shimen, "Stone Gate") | Lower abdomen | On the midline, 2 cun (two thumb-widths) below the navel. |
| CV 22 (Ren 22, Tiantu) | Base of the throat | In the soft notch at the top of the breastbone, between the collarbones. |
| KI 27 (Shufu) | Upper chest | Just under the collarbone, 2 cun out from the midline, in the hollow below its inner end. |
| LV 14 (Qimen) | Below the breast | Directly below the nipple, two ribs down, in the 6th intercostal space. |
| PC 8 (Laogong) | Center of palm | Make a loose fist; it is where the tip of your middle finger lands. |
| LV 3 (Taichong) | Top of the foot | Slide a finger up between the big toe and second toe bones until it stops in a hollow. |
| SP 10 (Xuehai) | Inner thigh above knee | With the knee bent, 2 cun above the upper inner corner of the kneecap, on the muscle bulge. |
| Yintang | Forehead | Midway between the inner ends of the eyebrows. |
Crystals for Anxiety and the Two-Week Wait
Yuen distinguishes fear from anxiety: fear is a threat happening now, while anxiety is a threat you anticipate. That makes anxiety the signature emotion of the two-week wait. In Chinese medicine, anxiety belongs to the heart and pericardium, and it scatters the qi, which is why it can feel impossible to think straight.
Moonstone is Yuen's grounding stone for anxiety. It is a potassium-rich feldspar, which in his system draws the heart's energy down into the lower burner, home of the uterus. Feldspars are called chang shi, "longevity stones," in Chinese.
Agate nurtures the virtue Yuen calls grace: the art of surrendering to what you cannot control. He suggests wearing agate as a pendant over the heart center. Agate is especially fitting for anyone who cannot stop analyzing every twinge after a transfer.
Where to place them
- Moonstone on CV 17, the pericardium point at the center of the breastbone, for 20 minutes while breathing slowly into the belly.
- Agate pendant resting on CV 17 during the wait.
- Hold rose quartz or amethyst in your right hand. Yuen lists rose quartz for fire and anxiety and calls amethyst the most harmonizing quartz.
If the anxiety is tied to uncertainty and constant change, Yuen pairs his anxiety stone with charoite.
Healing Stones for Panic Attacks and a Racing Heart
Waiting for beta results or a scan can bring on a racing heart and a wave of panic. Yuen uses carbonate stones for acute moments like these, because carbonates dissolve and act quickly.
Rhodochrosite is his acute stone for panic and palpitations. It is a manganese carbonate, and manganese nourishes the heart's blood. Dumortierite, a deep blue stone, is his choice for recurring panic attacks. It contains boron, which gives it a descending, anchoring quality, and it works on the heart-kidney axis.
Where to place them
- Rhodochrosite over the chest at CV 17 during a panic episode, or simply hold it.
- Roll two small rhodochrosite spheres in your palm. This Chinese practice stimulates PC 8, the center-of-palm point Yuen links to exhaustion and overwork.
- Dumortierite on KI 27, just under the inner end of the collarbone. Yuen names KI 27 as the default chest point when you are unsure where to start.
Crystals for Fear: Of Another Loss, of Procedures, of the Unknown
Fear belongs to the kidneys, the organ that also stores jing, our reproductive essence. Yuen teaches that fear suspends the qi, leaving us frozen. After a loss, many patients describe exactly this: wanting to try again, but too afraid to hope.
Chiastolite, the "cross stone," is Yuen's primary stone for deep-seated fear. As it forms, carbon inside it draws a natural cross, which he connects to the message "you are not alone, do not be afraid." It works between heart and kidneys, the axis of fire and water.
For a sense of renewal and direction, he adds moss agate or dendritic agate, and smoky quartz as the harmonizer. For nightmares, Yuen notes the old Chinese custom of placing flint under the pillow, because its warming yang protects against kidney fear.
Where to place them
- Chiastolite on KI 27 (under the collarbone) or held in the right hand.
- Dendritic agate on CV 5, two thumb-widths below the navel (more on this point below).
- Smoky quartz held during meditation, or placed beside you while you rest.
- Flint under the pillow on nights of bad dreams.
Crystals for Grief After Miscarriage or a Failed Cycle
Grief belongs to the lungs and depletes the qi. Yuen notes that grief often turns into rumination: replaying what you might have done differently. That replaying is a kind of fire that keeps draining you.
Sugilite is Yuen's primary grief stone. It contains lithium, which calms the spirit, and he chooses it specifically to clear the fire of rumination. When grief will not move, and you keep living the loss as if it is still happening, he uses apatite.
To help loosen the clinging, he adds blue lace agate (or blue lace chalcedony). For grief, Yuen makes one exception to matching quartz by color: use amethyst or ametrine, not smoky or milky quartz.
Releasing loss held in the body
Yuen teaches that trauma is often held in the torso, and he opens his emotional protocol with two stones:
- Obsidian on CV 8, the navel, to warm the lower abdomen and bring held trauma to the surface. Apache tears, a type of obsidian, are for the feeling that your body was taken from you.
- Rhodonite on the chest at CV 17, while you talk through or journal the loss. Rhodonite is Yuen's stone of forgiveness: of others, and of the body.
This pairing is strong work. Do it with your practitioner, between cycles, and not after ovulation, a transfer or a positive test.
Where to place them
- Sugilite worn as a bracelet, or placed on CV 17.
- Blue lace agate held in the right hand while resting.
- Amethyst or ametrine beside you during meditation or acupuncture.
Crystals for Depression, Melancholy and Lost Joy
Yuen separates depression into several patterns, and each has its own stone. Matching the stone to the pattern matters more than finding one "depression crystal."
| How it feels | Yuen's stone | Where to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Heavy, foggy, can't think clearly ("phlegm misting the mind") | Apophyllite, or yellow tiger's eye | Apophyllite on GB 14: 1 cun above the middle of the eyebrow, in line with the pupil. Tiger's eye on CV 12, upper abdomen. |
| Loss, abandonment, "I've lost something I can't get back" | Apophyllite | On GB 14, or held. |
| Withdrawn; you don't want to deal with the world (melancholy) | Chrysoprase | Held, or placed on CV 12. |
| Melancholy after a specific loss | Larimar | Worn as a pendant or bracelet. |
| You can't remember the last time you felt happy | Morganite | Worn over the heart. |
| Joy has drained away right now | Rhodochrosite | Roll spheres in the palm (PC 8). |
| Low mood that has lasted a long time | Kunzite, a lithium stone | Worn, or kept at the bedside. |
When the world exhausts you, Yuen uses carnelian to "lift back up," with citrine as the harmonizer. For low, flat energy, he also lays clear quartz points around the body with the tips pointing toward the head, so energy rises like a vortex.
Keep kunzite out of direct sunlight; Yuen notes it fades.
A Crystal for Jealousy When Others Announce Pregnancies
Almost every fertility patient knows the sting of a baby shower invitation or a surprise announcement. It is normal, and it is not a character flaw. Yuen describes jealousy as the feeling of "pick me, pick me" and not being picked, and he places it in the small intestine, the organ that sorts and chooses.
Chrysoprase, a green chalcedony colored by nickel, is his stone for jealousy and for the constant replaying of missed chances. It also appears in his protocol for melancholy, so it suits the mix of envy and withdrawal many patients feel.
How to use it: keep a small chrysoprase in a pocket or wear it as a bracelet, and hold it in your right hand before a gathering or when a social media post catches you off guard.
Healing Stones for Frustration and Anger
Your body is not doing what you are asking it to do, month after month. Yuen explains that the liver (wood) "likes results," and when anger has nowhere to go it turns into frustration, settling under the diaphragm and knotting the digestion.
- Nephrite jade is his stone for held-in frustration that is starting to harden into resentment. It carries magnesium to relax the spleen and iron to support the blood.
- Amazonite is his default when you are not sure what kind of anger you are dealing with, especially for people trained to swallow their anger.
- Azurite with malachite, two copper stones, are for an acute flash of anger. Yuen also uses them when the body has to adjust to an abrupt change.
- Prase (green quartz) is the harmonizer for anger.
Where to place them
- Amazonite on LV 14 (two ribs below the nipple) or LV 3 (top of the foot, between the first and second toe bones). Both are placements Yuen names for anger.
- Nephrite jade worn against the skin, or held.
- Azurite or malachite held in the hand until the wave passes.
Crystals for Self-Blame, Guilt and Self-Acceptance
"What did I do wrong?" may be the most common question in a fertility clinic. Yuen describes the goal of all emotional work as self-acceptance: accepting where you are right now, without the story that you made a mistake.
Peridot is his central stone for self-acceptance. Like diamond, it forms in the deepest layers of the earth, which Yuen links to the core of who you are. It is also a magnesium stone that relaxes the spleen and the overthinking mind, and it is his default when he is unsure where to begin.
Alongside it he uses rutilated quartz, which helps us stop blaming ourselves or others, and sugilite for guilt and remorse. Leopard skin jasper (also sold as rainforest jasper) helps break up the heaviness that sits in the chest.
Where to place them
- Peridot on CV 12, the upper abdomen. Yuen places his magnesium stones on the abdomen to settle the thinking mind first.
- Rutilated quartz held in the right hand during meditation.
- Leopard skin jasper on CV 17 when the chest feels tight or heavy.
Crystals for Sleep When Your Mind Won't Settle
Anxiety and grief often show up at 2 a.m. Yuen's simplest sleep remedy is agate: place it on CV 17 before bed to draw energy back to the heart, or tuck it under your pillow. He gives the same advice for children who sleep with their eyes slightly open, a sign in Chinese medicine of a restless hun (the soul aspect housed in the liver).
If nightmares are the problem, add flint under the pillow, as described in the section on fear.
Fertility Crystals in Jeffrey Yuen's Stone Medicine
Beyond the emotions, Yuen names a handful of stones for fertility itself.
Dendritic agate on CV 5, the "Stone Gate." Dendritic, tree and picture agates show plant-like patterns growing through stone, which Yuen reads as a symbol of fertility. He applies them over CV 5 (Shimen), two thumb-widths below the navel. Classical texts warn against needling this point in women, saying it can cause infertility. Yuen teaches the reverse for stones: applied there, dendritic agate supports fertility. He uses it where the Ren (Conception) vessel is undernourished, such as low progesterone, and where dampness contributes to early miscarriage.
Carnelian for a cold uterus. In Yuen's teaching, carnelian warms and strengthens the Du (Governing) vessel and carries that warmth into the Chong vessel and the uterus. He uses it for infertility from deficiency and cold. Wear it as a pendant or bracelet that touches the skin.
Opal for bonding. Yuen calls opal the mother-figure stone: forgiving, embracing, allowing you to shine. In emotional work he places it beside the navel, where the umbilical cord once connected us to our own mothers.
A quartz Guanyin at home. Guanyin, the goddess of mercy holding a child, is traditionally carved from clear quartz for couples hoping to conceive. In Yuen's feng shui teaching, the west of the home is the palace of children and creativity.
Jade as a milestone gift. When a patient commits to caring for themselves, Yuen suggests jade, the stone of completion, as one of the best gifts a practitioner can give.
A Simple 20-Minute Stone Healing Routine
Yuen's sequence is to settle the thinking mind first, then work with the emotion, then harmonize. Here is an at-home version built on that order.
- Lie on your back with a pillow under your knees. Take a few slow breaths into your lower belly.
- Settle the mind. Place peridot on CV 12, the upper abdomen.
- Choose your emotion stone from the sections above (for example, moonstone for anxiety or sugilite for grief) and place it on CV 17, the center of the chest.
- Hold your harmonizer in your right hand: rose quartz for anxiety, amethyst for grief, smoky quartz for fear, citrine for overthinking.
- Rest for 20 minutes. Yuen asks patients where in the body they feel an emotion; notice where yours lives, and breathe into that spot.
- Finish by removing the stones in reverse order. Wash your hands and drink some water.
Repeat daily or a few times a week. Keep a bracelet of the same stones on during the day so the support continues.
Safety and Caring for Your Stones
Use stones on the outside of the body only. Do not drink crystal elixirs while trying to conceive or during pregnancy. Yuen specifically advises against taking agate internally in pregnancy because of its descending nature, and many stones contain trace metals. Placing, holding and wearing agate is fine.
Save the deep release work for between cycles. Strong trauma-release placements on the lower abdomen are best done with your practitioner, not in the window after ovulation, after a transfer, or once you are pregnant.
Buy natural stones. Yuen warns that brightly dyed agate (unnatural blues and purples) and laser-made "phantom" crystals are common. Small, inexpensive tumbled stones work well.
Cleanse and recharge them. Stones hold the energy of whoever handles them, so Yuen recommends keeping your own stones in a small pouch. To care for them:
| Stone | Cleanse | Recharge |
|---|---|---|
| Most stones | Soak 8 to 24 hours in naturally sparkling mineral water, or rinse under a slow stream of water | Set on a bed of red hematite |
| Agate, carnelian | Once a month under slow running water | Sunlight |
| Moonstone, opal | Gentle rinse | Moonlight only; never sun or salt |
| Kunzite | Gentle rinse | Hematite; keep out of sunlight, which fades it |
Frequently Asked Questions About Crystal Healing for Fertility
What is the best crystal for fertility anxiety?
In Jeffrey Yuen's stone medicine, moonstone is a primary stone for anxiety because it draws the heart's energy down to the lower abdomen. Place it on CV 17 at the center of the chest, and hold rose quartz or amethyst in your right hand.
Which crystal helps with grief after a miscarriage?
Yuen's primary grief stone is sugilite. For grief that will not move, he uses apatite, and he pairs grief work with amethyst or ametrine rather than smoky quartz. Rhodonite, his stone of forgiveness, can be placed on the chest.
Where do you put crystals for fertility?
Yuen places dendritic agate on CV 5, two thumb-widths below the navel. Carnelian is worn against the skin for a cold uterus, and opal can rest beside the navel.
Can I use crystals during IVF or pregnancy?
Use stones topically only. Do not drink crystal elixirs while trying to conceive or while pregnant, and do strong lower-abdominal release work only between cycles with your practitioner.
How does stone medicine differ from New Age crystal healing?
Chinese stone medicine chooses stones by their mineral chemistry, crystal structure and color, and places them on acupuncture points. Its roots go back to the earliest Chinese materia medicas, which list stones before herbs.
Does crystal healing replace fertility treatment?
No. Stone medicine is a gentle complement to acupuncture, herbal medicine and your medical care.
